Member Q and A

In June, 2007 the CAP began posting questions it received from the community or that the group itself posed to Roche Colorado.  The answers presented to these questions are the result of some mix of CAP research and/or responses provided by the company.

Click on the CAP Members link under Contacts in the Table of Contents at the left of this web page to access the email address where any questions or other communications to the CAP may be directed.  The most recent questions are listed first and space limitations may prevent retaining the oldest questions indefinitely.  Repeated or closely related questions may be updated to the top of this list and/or be added to the FAQs page.

I've heard the term "Responsible Care".  What is it and how is Roche involved? - July 2007

Responsible Care is a worldwide industry initiative implemented in the U.S. through the American Chemistry Council.  It is a voluntary initiative to continuously improve and protect the environment and the health, safety, and security of employees and community members.  Participating companies are held accountable to exceed pertinent regulatory requirements as well as being required to openly communicate their results to the public.  More information on Responsible care can be found at http://www.cmahq.com/ or http://www.americanchemistry.com/.

Roche participates globally in the Responsible Care program and Roche Colorado has achieved full site certification.

What is that plume of white smoke I see rising from the back of Roche's property? - June 2007

In 2002, Roche installed a thermal oxidation combustion device to treat organic vapors from its operations.  This device uses heat to reduce organic compounds to the basic components of carbon dioxide and water that are emitted through a stack at the western edge of the site.  In the same way your breath steams when it's cold, the warm water in this exhaust will reach its dewpoint under the right atmospheric conditions and become visible as the white plume that you have noticed.
